The inaugural STEAMigPOWER dissemination event in Portugal took place on May 7 at the University of Minho, Campus of Gualtar, in Braga. This event brought together migration experts, educators, and participants to discuss the integration of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers through STEAM education.
The event featured notable speakers, including Catarina Reis Oliveira, Director of the portuguese Migration Observatory; Nuno Costa Jorge and Hamed Hamdard from the portuguese Refugee Support Platform (PAR); and Maria Fátima Pereira from the Local Support Center for the Integration of Migrants of the Guimarães City Council. They shared their valuable insights on various topics, including social inclusion, support for refugees, and the unique challenges migrants face when integrating into new environments.
A highlight of the event was the introduction of the STEAMigPOWER project and its goals presented by Sofia Barbosa Pereira and António Vicente, coordinators of the project at UMinho. The project focuses on developing educational programs that cater to the needs of migrants and refugees, aiming to promote diversity and inclusion through STEAM-based courses. This initiative seeks to provide migrants with the tools they need to thrive in their host communities. As part of this initiative, a free intensive program will be offered to the target group in July, focusing on various STEAM subjects. This program is designed to further support the integration of migrants and refugees by equipping them with valuable skills and knowledge.
In the coming days, we will post the recording of the event on our website, allowing those who couldn’t attend to catch up on the discussions. We encourage everyone to stay tuned for more updates from STEAMigPOWER.
Further dissemination events will take place in Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey during May and June, 2024.
More information about the STEAMigPOWER programme will be soon available at our website.
